The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has launched a global plastic initiative with the bold vision of ending global plastic pollution. The initiative aims to shift from the current linear "take-make-dispose" model to a circular system where plastic products are designed to be reused, recycled and repurposed.
The initiative focuses on four key goals: reducing unnecessary plastic production, designing products for circularity, ensuring the practical implementation of circular economy, and properly managing non-recyclable plastic waste. It sets targets to have 45 countries improve their plastic policies, 500 private sector actors adopt circular solutions, and 50 financial institutions integrate plastic pollution reduction into their sustainability strategies by 2030. This initiative will promote global cooperation in the plastic industry and accelerate the transition to sustainable development.
